Description:
VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE SINGLE ACTION ARMY “LONG FLUTE” CYLINDER VARIATION, .45 COLT, 4 ¾” BARREL, #331XXX, WITH FACTORY LETTER.  Only approximately 1500 of this distinct model were made  in the serial number range of 330001 – 331480 and this example falls within that range. The unusual aspect of these Long Flute Colts was that they were made using left over 1878 Double Action Frontier cylinders. When used on that model, these cylinders had fairly long cylinder flutes with no locking notches on the outside of the cylinder- they locked up from the rear. So, when Colt decided to use them on their Single Action Army, they were cut with locking notches and the elongated flutes remained. With only 1500 made, they are seldom seen today and are considered a very desirable variation of the SAA. I actually found this one in Arizona and sent for the letter myself. The letter verifies/states that this revolver in .45 Colt Caliber and 4 ¾” barrel with blue finish was “Furnished with a double action cylinder of long flute configuration” and was sold to Preston Simms (address not listed) and shipped to Sears Roebuck & Company, Chicago, Illinois on December 14, 1914 in a shipment of 1 gun. I don’t know who Preston Simms was, but some ancestry work might prove interesting on the name. This Colt is in particularly fine condition with good original blue on the barrel top and right side. The left side is getting silvery- no doubt from holster carry. The ejector flutes, top and bottom, show fine blue with the outside edge silvery- again typical holster wear. There is thinning silvery/blue on the outside of the cylinder with fine blue in the flutes. There is also good blue in the protected area around the bottom of the trigger guard, on the butt and shows aged blue on the back strap with brighter blue at the top around the hammer etc. The front strap and bottom of the trigger guard are gray. The frame is a very mottled gray where the case colors have faded, but is not worn off to silver as usually seen. There are very small traces of case color on the frame in front of the cylinder and some good color on the hammer sides. The front sight has not been altered, all markings are sharp and clear including the correct two line barrel address used only on 4 ¾” barrel length guns (the longer 5 ½” and 7 ½” have a one line address). The frame patent dates and rampant colt stamp is also sharp and clear. Serial numbers match and the grips fit perfectly, showing only light wear mainly on the right lower side- again typical of a revolver carried in a holster with the right side exposed and rubbed. Fine action, screws and exc. bore. Many advanced Single Action Army collections lack one of these rare Long Flute Colts.
