Very Long KETLAND & CO. Smoothbore MILITIA Musket .56 Caliber FUSIL 1700s
Late-1700s Flintlock Musket Converted to Percussion Circa 1840
Here we present an antique Early American Smoothbore Militia Musket or Fusil in .56 Caliber with a Ketland & Co. Lock, made circa the late-1700s. This musket is quite long as they tended to be, featuring a 46-inch barrel set into a full-length and typically narrow and straight stock. A single trigger was used rather than the very popular double set trigger seen on many dedicated hunting rifles of the day. This type of arm was many times provided to members by the local government but also could have been privately purchased. In addition to duty use, these were often used for putting game on the table.
The overall condition is fair. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and in good shape. There are several repairs throughout the stock as seen in the photos. The back portion of the butt plate has been replaced. The original front sight is still present and is just behind the dovetailed addition. The reads “Ketland & Co.” A fantastic example of a very old American militia musket!
