Description:
MT. VERNON OHIO Antique W.A. CUNNINGHAM AMERICAN .38 Caliber LONG RIFLE

OHIO Smoothbore Made Circa the Mid-1850s

Here we present an antique W.A. Cunningham Percussion Half-Stock Long Rifle in .38 Caliber, made circa the mid-1850s in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Cunningham was an active gunmaker in Mt. Vernon between the years of 1852 and 1860. This rifle features a more exaggerated sloping wrist down to the butt stock. A small brass patchbox is set in the right side and the butt plate is also of brass. Double set triggers and a fully octagonal barrel in .38 caliber. This would have been an essential piece of equipment whether on the homestead or ranging throughout the Western Frontier.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

The overall condition is Very Good. The action is strong with a great set trigger pull. The bore is dark and dusty with age. The are two crack on the left side of the stock. One on the forend, and the other just under the breech. Neither have any movement. “WM. H. SOWERS/WARRANTED” is engraved on the lock. The other markings are clear as well. A very nice example of a traditional plains rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 35 inches.

Caliber: .38 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
