The British military, like many militaries of the day, was in the process of updating its arsenal from single shot percussion muskets to breech-loading cartridge rifles. Rather than retire all their existing muskets at once and choosing a completely new platform the government opted to adopt and install a breech-loading conversion. The result was still a large bore, single shot rifle, but it could be loaded much more quickly and efficiently than ramming a ball down from the front. They went on to see use throughout the world in colonies and commonwealth. This is an example of a MKII*. The barrel and breech are littered with proof marks. All the markings are clear and easy to read. The left side of the stock is marked “DC” within a diamond for “Dominion of Canada”. The overall condition is near fine. The bore is in very nice shape with good rifling. The action is strong and tight. However, the firing pin assembly has been removed. The aperture remains threaded and the assembly could be replaced. A solid example of a Canadian MKII* Infantry Rifle from the 1860s! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36-5/8 inches.
