This is a pre-1877 short rifle, originally chambered in .450 Boxer-Henry Long, but converted to .577/.450 Martini after the latter’s adoption by Britain. The metal of this rifle has a mixed plum-brown and pewter gray patina with darkly mottled patches of light pitting and old oxidation throughout. The back-action, left-hand lock is dated 1876, and, although fully functional, stands proud of the wood at the rear of the plate. The breech-block is cleaned to bright, and has several deep peen marks across the top. The walnut buttstock and forend have been arsenal refinished to fine condition with only minor handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout, however the issue markings are still clear and legible on the left side of the butt: “NSW / NB / 271" (New South Wales Naval Brigade #271), and the “sold out of service" (Broad Arrows) “S" stamp is still quite crisp. The original ramrod is included. These rifles were subjected to hard use and are very seldom seen today. This example is in good-very good condition, and would make a great addition to any collection.
