Churchill Best grade boxlock 20 bore with full coverage John Sumner tight scroll engraving, 26" brightly blued steel barrels and very strong, timed Southgate ejectors. Smallbore shotguns are practically nonexistent by this maker during this time period as Churchill built more live pigeon guns than anything else before WW1. This gun was built in 1911, when Mr. E. J. Churchill still ran the company he founded in 1891 at 8 Agar St. Strand and before his nephew Robert Churchill took over management and began offering many quality levels of guns. He only offered three models until his death, a Best hammer, Best hammerless sidelock , and Best boxlock of which this is one. He marked his best grades with his EJC monogram on the bottom of the frames, which this gun has. Don Masters, in his book The House of Churchill, makes note of this fact. This gun sold for £60 which was more than many firms charged for their best hammerless sidelocks. It was originally Cyl. and Cyl. bored as it is not stamped Choke on either barrel ahead of the flats. This gun is all original with the exception that it's chambers have been lengthened to 2 3/4" from 2 1/2" and apparently bores have been polished in the past to give it .002R/.003L chokes(see below measurements). It was sent to Kirk Merrington in 2017 for evaluation and it has sufficient wall thickness to handle standard 7/8 oz. loads. It shoots beautifully with RST low pressure loads and weighs and handles like a 28 gauge. It is as tight, clean and on face as the day it was made. These pictures really do not do it justice. It is a quail shooters delight. Free shipping to lower 48 except California. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Shotgun Gauge: 20 Gauge Manufacturer: E.J.
