Description:
The original medium-frame .357. The Model 19 started production in 1955 under the name Combat Magnum and was given model number 19 in 1957 and continued in production under that designation until 1999. A newer, “Classics” version was released later. The 19 was produced in 2.5-inch, 3-inch (rare), 4-inch, 5-inch (rare), and 6-inch variations, with the first having a round butt and the latter four with a square butt. This 19-4 is a Renaissance Commemorative model for the Detroit Police Department, whose motto is “Tuebor”, which is Latin for “I will defend”. On the left side of the frame, the revolver is marked 1 of 865. Apparently all "Tuebor" revolvers are marked this way. The “Tuebor” on the backstrap, the Detroit PD Shield on the side plate, and the “Renaissance 1978” on the barrel are in gold. The 19 also features a 4-inch heavy barrel, a red ramp front sight, micrometer click rear sight, square-butt “plain” (i.e. non-checkered) target grips, .400-inch smooth target trigger, and .500” serrated target hammer. The Model 19 was designed to allow police officers to practice with the handgun using the 38 Special and carry it with the 357 Magnum in a handgun lighter than the larger N-frame Model 27. That the revolver fulfilled its intended role well has been well recorded in the annals of law enforcement history. The Model 19 is one of the more fondly remembered revolvers from the 50’s-80’s. They have been used by such agencies as the Secret Service, FBI, several state highway patrols, and the Naval Investigative Service (NIS, predecessor to the famous NCIS). The finish is in excellent condition, with the only wear being the slightest turn ring around the cylinder. The grips exhibit very little wear. The bore is in excellent condition. There are no signs of powder residue there or even on the front of the cylinder. This Model 19-4 would be an excellent addition to the collection of any police or Smith & Wesson enthusiast.
