CIVIL WAR Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .42 Cal. RIFLE
SCARCE Drop Breach Single Shot Rifle
Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Falling Block Rifle in .42 Rimfire, made circa the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Fewer than 2,000 of these rifles are thought to have been made in any variant. Though not standard issue, this rifle saw service in the American civil War through private purchases by soldiers. It features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with a very neat adjustable rear sight. The rear sight tips and its arm points to various ranges which also have notches which allow the arm to rest in under spring tension. This rifle is equipped with the optional sling loops ahead of the forearm and under the buttstock. The lowering action of the breech block automatically ejected the spent cartridge.
The top of the barrel is marked “ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN’S PAT. SEP. 18. 1860”. The butt plate has a cleaning rod trap. The serial number is “566” and numbers match.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray patina throughout. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has a short crack at the wrist, and is otherwise in good condition. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent.
