Nice Antique AMES U.S. Model 1840 ARTILLERY Saber
Dated “1861” & Inspected by John Taylor
Here we present an antique Ames Mfg. Co. U.S. Model of 1840 Mounted Artillery Saber, made circa 1861. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single brass knucklebow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. The Ames address is on the left side of the ricasso. The right side of the ricasso is marked “U.S./J.T./1861”. The inspector’s initials likely belong to Sub-Ordnance Inspector John Taylor. The number “2” is stamped on the brass guard. The overall length is 37-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 32 inches. The scabbard is marked “J.H.” on the drag. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Artillery Troops.
The overall condition is Near Fine. The twisted wire and leather handle are secure. The markings are clear and the steel shines bright. The scabbard is in good condition making this a great piece to complement any collectors display case. Here is a great Civil War Mounted Artillery Saber!
