Henry Eichholz Leman was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, March 8, 1812, and died there March 12, 1887. During his career he became a major supplier of small arms to both civilians, fur trading companies and the government, the latter two entities he contracted with to make muskets for trading purposes with the various native tribes found all over North America. This one bears his name and maker’s mark on the barrel and “J. Cooper” on the lock. The stock is set with brass tacks. Firearms recovered from Native American camps and battles during the Indian Wars, would traditionally have designs depicting tribal symbols with carvings and brass tacks. In the case of Kills Two, a Crazy Horse follower, he carved his “life sign” into the grips of his pistol which consisted of an “S” with two lines through it. When Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle’s rifle was captured during the unfortunate events of Custer’s 1868 massacre, it also showcased brass tacks as this example does. The overall condition is fair. The action functions. The bore is smooth and dark. The stock is cracked around the lock. A rare opportunity to own one of these Indian Trade Guns! Own the original!
