Description:
The Trooper Mark III was introduced in 1969 as part of the new Mark III Series of revolvers designed to replace Colt’s old, medium frame revolvers which by the late 1960s were becoming too expensive and labor intensive to maintain profitability against competitors. The Trooper was built as a target grade version of the Mark III series. Barrel lengths were 4, 6 and 8 inches with a shrouded ejector rod. The Trooper Mk III, as the target model of the line, introduced Colt’s first Target trigger. It was fitted with Colt’s Target grips and a wide (0.5”), serrated Target hammer as well, the width being identical to Smith & Wesson’s N-frame target models such as the Model 27 and 29. This Trooper Mk III was produced in 1970 and shows signs of having been used as a law enforcement sidearm. Although the Lawman Mk III was intended as the service model of the Mk III line, it was inevitable that some in the law enforcement community chose the Trooper Mk III as the original Trooper was built as a service pistol as well. The revolver exhibits holster wear on the tips of the barrel, the ejector shroud, the lower right-side of the frame, the cylinder edges, the bottom of the trigger guard, and on the top of the backstrap. The remainder of the bluing is in good shape otherwise. The grips also exhibit minor finish and handling wear. Conversely, the bore is in excellent condition with some minor copper fowling but no rust or pitting. The revolver should extremely accurate. Lock up on this example is as good as any Mk III revolver. The Mk III line did not achieve the same level of lock-up on firing as the older models did. This was perhaps their only drawback. Ultimately, the Mk III series served the law enforcement community well until replaced by semi-auto pistols beginning in the 1980’s.
