Description:
VERY FINE CONDITION ANTIQUE SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45 COLT WITH 7 ½” BARREL, #141XXX, MADE 1891. This is a really great SAA that turned up in Arizona. I went over it very carefully and for an 1891 production, black powder Colt, it is one of the better ones I’ve seen in a long time. I called Colt to get a factory letter and the info on this one was that it was shipped to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis ("Gateway to the West") as a .45 Colt caliber, blued revolver with a 4 ¾” barrel. I was pretty shocked at this as the wear is so consistent and even on all the major parts that I still believe it is 100% correct. However, I want to be up-front about this one in that it will not letter with a 7 ½” barrel. My feeling is that this is probably because of a couple of possibilities. The first is that the factory records are not always accurate. The serial numbers and features were entered in a hand written book during a time of gas lighting and typically non-corrected vision. OR, it is possible that the gun was actually shipped as a 4 3/4” barrel that within a short time (1892 or 1893) was returned to Colt by the owner for a 7 ½” barrel. There is usually no record of guns returned and repaired. Either way, this is a correct and very attractive Single Action. The barrel retains most of the deep Colt blue with only a touch of muzzle wear on the right side and a streak of gray about a third of the way back from the muzzle on the left side from holster carry. The barrel blue shows good “feathering” on each side of the front sight. The ejector housing retains most of the blue with only some light thinning/wear to the outside edge. The cylinder retains fine deep blue with normal edge wear and some light age only with bright blue in the flutes. The bottom of the trigger guard and front strap retain some good blue mixing with gray mostly on the front strap. The butt retains good blue with light wear only and the back strap is mostly gray with bright blue on the upper portion above the oval Colt of the grips. The cylinder pin and screws retain excellent blue and all markings on the barrel and .frame are sharp and clear. BEST OF ALL is the frame which shows good case color on the bottom and rear portions on both sides with a little better color on the left side. The recoil shield on the left side is mottled silvery with excellent case color inside toward the hammer on both sides. The loading gate has a mottled silvery appearance where the color has faded, but above, below and inside the loading gate is vivid color. The front of the frame ahead of the cylinder also shows fine case color. The correct hammer shows some dark case color on the sides when in the down position and vivid color on the sides when cocked. Eagle grips are excellent and fit well. Action is tight and bore is excellent. I suppose one could find a 4 ¾” barrel on a Colt 1878 Double Action or another SAA to swap out, but I want to leave this one just as I found it as I believe it is correct and a most attractive Black Powder Frame 129 year old Colt. Priced well below market because of the Colt letter discrepancy.
