Description:
Antique HARPERS FERRY US M1842 Musket & 1863 REVISED U.S. ARMY REGULATIONS

With Provenance to the 16th Connecticut Infantry!

Here we present an antique Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Musket & the 1863 Revised U.S. Army Regulations manual. The musket was manufactured circa 1847 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This manual is inscribed “6a B 16th U.S. C.T.” just inside the cover. The 16th Connecticut saw massive casualties right off the bat, being raised 24 August 1862 and thrown into the maw that was the Battle of Antietam only a few weeks later 16-17 September. While they had little training and no combat experience, they were tasked to support Burnside’s flank during his advance on Sharpsburg. They were devastated by the Confederates under A.P. Hill with 43 killed, 161 wounded and 204 captured or missing. The regiment would carry on and participate in the Battle of Fredericksburg 12-15 December, General Burnside’s “Mud March” 20-24 January 1863, the Siege of Suffolk 12 April to 4 May, Dix’s Peninsula Campaign 24 June-7 July. In 1864, during the Siege of Plymouth (17-20 April), North Carolina, the regimental garrison was unexpectedly attacked on Sunday morning (20th April) by a Confederate force that dwarfed the 400 of the 16th by as many as 5 to 1, led by General Hoke. Virtually the entire regiment was captured and imprisoned until March 1865. Unfortunately, being imprisoned at Andersonville Prison simply brought about a much slower death for many as disease was rampant.

This volume also contains portraits of both Lieutenant General Grant as well as General Sherman for the officer’s reference. These manuals were issued to officers to be used as references for US Army standards and decorum.

The lock of the musket is marked “HARPERS FERRY/1847” and also has the federal eagle stamp. The underside of the lock and the top of the butt plate are marked “U.S.”. The barrel is also dated “1847”.

This musket is a truly fantastic set that remains virtually untouched since retired from service. The book is in very good condition with good binding and boards. The musket is likewise in very good condition. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition. The stock is solid and shows the sort of honest wear you would expect from a 173-year-old infantry musket. An incredible collection of American history!
