What a rare collector's 1911 this one is. This gun is one of a batch of 5000 1911s that were in for a rebuild and were in such poor condition they were put aside until 1942 and then rebuilt. The original serial numbers were scrubbed and new numbers starting with X were hand applied, the following is from J.C. Harrison's, book page 177, U.S. Pistols & Revolvers 1909-1945. "X Prefix to serial number on 1911 and 1911A1 pistols. New numbers with an X prefix were used to replace defaced or removed serial numbers. About 5000 of these numbers were used between 1927 and 1942". A similar statement can be found in Clawson's book Colt .45 Service Pistols Models of 1911 & 1911 A1.
The condition of this gun is only fair. The frame is a Remington UMC that has had the original markings scrubbed and replaced with a X serial number and hand stamped United States Property. The gun is a totally legitimate U.S. arsenal rebuild. The frame is in rather good condition. The slide is also quite nice however the left side does have some small areas of scattered light pinpricks. There are no rust patches, large scratches or rubs mars however. The gun has the Original WW II walnut checkered grips and a WWII High Standard barrel. The bore is very bright with sharp rifling and a just touch of light scattered frost.
This anomaly is quite proper from what we found from our research. It would really make something to talk about for the serious collector. Reasonably priced and it comes with our "Purchase Satisfaction Guarantee"..... Shipped.... $1295.
