Here we present an antique Left-Handed Flintlock Rifle, made in the late 18th century in Le Perigord, France. With its long, heavy barrel and fantastic sights, this rifle would have been great for hunting or for target sport. The lock is marked “Giallier Le Perigord/Apice Dauphine/Paris”. Given its high quality, custom left-handed lock and stock, the unique sights and the inscription, this rifle was custom made for quite a wealthy patron, the King of France. “Giallier Le Perigord” is the maker’s mark and “Apice Dauphine” is an inscription to the patron, the “Apex Dauhpine” or the Queen of France, perhaps as a gift to her left-handed, husband who loved to hunt. Dauphine is a former province in southeastern France whose local ruler, the Count Guigues IV of Albon (c. 1100s) used a dolphin on his coat of arms and was called “Le Dauphin” or “The Dolphin”. His descendants changed their title to “Dauhpin of Viennois” and the name of the region became Dauphine. In 1349, rule of the region and the title was transferred to the king of France. This is how the title “Dauphin” came to King Louis XVI and “Dauphine” to Queen Marie Antoinette. Interestingly, both King Louis XVI and his queen loved to hunt. It seems that the Royal Hunt was an avenue of escape for Louis and Marie alike. Hunting was done on both horseback and on foot at Versailles. Louis commissioned the making of several firearms for Marie, and, even though it was not deemed ladylike, the Queen continued the sport of hunting and riding. She even had a portrait painted of her in riding habit. On July 14, 1789, the day that the Bastille fell in Paris, Louis wrote in his hunting diary “Rien” or “Nothing”, perhaps an omen of what was to come for him and Marie. This piece is in fine condition. The maple stock is complete with no structural cracks or damage. The bore is excellent. The action needs a bit of fitting for the sear to properly engage with the set trigger. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 44 inches in length. Caliber: .50 Bore is in excellent condition. The action does need a little adjustment to function again, but all the pieces are present and in good condition. Overall condition as seen in photos.
