FINE TENNESSEE BRASS MOUNTED TIGER MAPLE PERCUSSION MULE EAR LONGRIFLE CIRCA 1840’S. 58” overall with 42” octagon .50 caliber deeply rifled unsigned octagon barrel. Tiger maple stock with brass mounts and brass horizontal “Cigar” lid patch box cover very popular on Tennessee longrifles. Distinctive wide brass trigger guard bow of Appalachian School type. Unique large shield form brass wrist escutcheon. Large brass rectangular wedge escutcheons. Even has a brass trigger. Hand made “Mule Ear” lock with quite distinctive form hammer ear of larger than usually seen. Barrel with iron semi-buckhorn rear and German silver blade front sights. Tiger maple stock with old repair at wrist. Very well pronounce “tiger” grain to the full length of the forend. Original hickory ramrod. Extremely well made middle Tennessee rifle from the area about Nashville. We have not seen another one by this maker but the features speak for themselves and the quality and brass mounts as opposed to iron suggests the more affluent Nashville area. The Mule Ear lock is unusual for the area but was popular in the 1840’s with the U.S. Govt. adoption of the Jenks rifles and carbines.
