British Contract GREENE PATENT Breech Loading CARBINE 1 of 2,000 Made for British Use in the CRIMEAN WAR! Here we present an antique Massachusetts Arms Co. British Contract Greene Patent Breech Loading Carbine manufactured circa the mid-1850s. The Greene Patent Carbine was produced in limited numbers for both the US and Britain. The U.S. purchased 200 rifles with 22-inch barrels for testing, but no further orders were made. Right around 2,000, and most of them were made to fill the British contract. These were not adopted and after the Crimean War, Britain appears to have surplussed these, and it is believed that many were sold back to the states during the American Civil War. These remain very scarce and hard to find. What makes this carbine so unique is the method of accessing the breech. There are 4 steps to open: 1) pull the front trigger, which unlocks the lugs so you can 2) rotate the lugs (using the 16-sided portion), 3) pull the barrel away from the breech, and 4) pivot the barrel assembly clockwise for easy access to load. This system is gorgeously machined and operates like glass. It is really a wonder of 1850s manufacturing. Combine this with the Maynard tape primer, which used a roll of paper percussion caps, and fed a new cap with each time the hammer is cocked, and you have a very technologically advanced piece of machinery. For the time, this would have been an excellent breech loading option. One can imagine that it may have been on the expensive end of a long list of various cavalry carbines of the period. The over condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. All markings are clear. This is one of those rarities that always makes an impression. This is a solid carbine with a distinctive action! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 18 inches in length. Caliber: .577 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
