Lechler of Philadelphia, made circa the 1850s. This maker came from a family of German gun makers centered in Pennsylvania. Henry Lechler was active in the late 18th Century in Lancaster, then Carlisle. His son, Henry Lechler Jr. was active in Philadelphia was active from the 1830s through the 1850s. This musket features a smoothbore octagonal barrel in .50 caliber. It is equipped with rifle sights and is handsomely decorated with an oval patch box in the right side of the stock and a stag escutcheon in the cheek piece on the left. The butt plate, trigger guard, lock, and barrel tang are engraved. The top of the barrel is marked “J.A. LECHLER PHILA”. Triggers are double set. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark the age. The markings are legible. The bore is smooth and dark. The stock is in good shape with very nice grain. The action on this rifle is strong.
