1840s Percussion Plains Rifle with Beautiful Décor!
Here we present an antique Engraved “J. Hall” Marked Half-Stock Long Rifle made in New York, circa the 1840s.
The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:
“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.
Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”
This .36 caliber rifle is marked “J. Hall” on both the lock and barrel. German silver escutcheons, engraved patchbox, and breech inlays satisfy our visual appetite by adding a beautiful contrast with the maple stock. Almost every imagination will conjure a rifle like this when thinking of the events that unfolded in the 1840s-50s. With the political turmoil of free states and slave states, Goldrushers, and the Mexican-American War afoot, this would have been a nice rifle to keep around at the homestead for defense and providing a decent meal.
The overall condition is Good. The action is strong with the double set triggers, but the strength in the springs has been better. The bore is dark with age. There are 2 small cracks, one behind the breech, and the other opposite the hammer on the left stock, neither having any movement. A great example of Frontier rifle that fits into any American historical collection!
