RARE Period Copy of SHARPS 1853 SLANT BREECH Rifle
Confederate Georgia State Armory-Nepal Connection?
Here we present a rare eriod copy of the Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Rifle, made circa the 1860s. This full-length military rifle was found in Nepal in a large cache of old weapons. The only marking on the piece is just under the long rear sight leaf and is Nepalese. While these rare pieces are neat on their own, it has been supposed by some that these were made in the South during the later stages of the American Civil War as the Confederacy fought to arm their troops. The theory is that D.C. Hodgkins & Sons (an arms importer, dealer and manufacturing operation in Macon, Georgia before the war), which was taken over by the state of Georgia in order to supply troops, began making copies of Sharps’ slant breech design for the war effort. Upon defeat and Reconstruction, these few rifles and perhaps a lot of unassembled parts were lying around looking for a market and made their way to Nepal, which was a good market for that kind of thing as they were using British Enfield muskets and making their own at the time.
Evidence is circumstantial, but wood samples of those found in Nepal have turned out to be from Honduras in South America. The consensus seems to be that the workmanship is cruder than Sharps, but better than what was feasible in Nepal at the time. Confederate copies of Sharps rifles were produced at several armories in the South. As information continues to emerge from unlikely places, it may turn out that there is some truth to this theory. Regardless of the origin, this is a really neat opportunity to own a Sharps Slant Breech Rifle, one that comes with its own mysteries that tantalize the imagination.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The stock remains smooth and solid. The bore remains untouched and is dark with good rifling and could be cleaned up. The action is functional. The spring holding the breech lever in place is a bit weak and could be replaced to hold that breech block still. What an interesting old rifle!
