Description:
PHILLY-Made Antique MARTIN & SMITH PA Long Rifle

Circa 1850s Full-Stock Rifle

Here we present an antique Full-Stock Pennsylvania Long Rifle in .40 Caliber, made circa the 1850s. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsman all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This one, made by Martin & Smith of 98 Market St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, did survive!

Their names are marked atop the long, 42-inch octagonal barrel. The right side of the butt stock is equipped with a large brass patch box the button to which is cleverly disguised under the finial on the toe. The mechanism features double set triggers for precision shooting. This rifle would have been used to put food on the table and defend the homestead. This one was used as you can see, but also well-cared for and kept running for a long time.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are mostly legible. The maple stock has seen use and the elements, and it has a few small repairs (such as the piece behind the hammer), yet it remains smooth and solid. The bore is in good condition, dark with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic rifle that would tell some tales if it could!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .42 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
