Description:
OHIO Antique VANTREES .58 Caliber LONG RIFLE

JF VANTREES with “EAGLE GUN FACTORY” Lock

Here we present an antique Half-Stock Long Rifle in .58 Caliber by James Frederick VanTrees, made circa the 1840s at Fort Recovery, Ohio. VanTrees was an early American arms producer at the fort, which was established circa 1793, in between two major battles with Native Americans. This would have been considered the Frontier at the time. VanTrees and his son were active in their trade of gun making from about 1826 until about 1900.

This rifle features an “EAGLE GUN FACTORY” lock, which dates to the 1830s-1850s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eagle Gun Factory was owned by James Golcher, a prolific name in the business of making components such as locks for gun makers to purchase. This .58 caliber rifle features a relatively heavy octagonal barrel with nice rifle sights. The front sight has an ivory insert for increased visibility. This rifle is also equipped with double set triggers for precision shooting. This would have been a great plains rifle and good for taking medium to very large sized game and of course providing protection for the homestead, fort, or wherever the traveler may find himself.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape. The bore is clean with deep, sharp rifling. The action is excellent. The rear set trigger must be set in order to fire this rifle. This is really is a high-quality rifle and it would make a great shooter & hunter still!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33-5/8 inches.
