Description:
GOLD MINING CALIFORNIA TOWN Antique B.B. BIGELOW.41 Caliber LONG RIFLE

Made in MARYSVILLE, CALIFORNIA with Patriotic Patchbox!

Here we present an antique Benjamin Berry Bigelow Half-Stock Back Action Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the start of the Civil War. Bigelow owned and ran his gunmaking business in Marysville, California from 1860 until 1888, after arriving in Marysville in the summer of 1850. Marysville was incorporated in 1843 and is located between Chico and Sacramento in Yuba County and has been the most productive region for gold mining in Northern California ever since 1842. Marysville has long been known as the “Gateway to the Gold Fields”, ever since the Gold Rush of 1849 and all the “49ers” who came to seek their fortunes. Marysville got its name from one of the original inhabitants, Mary Murphy-Covillaud, one of the survivors of the infamous Donner Party who were stranded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains the winter of 1846/1847.

Bigelow was also the Marshal of the Marysville Pioneer Society in the early 1870s, whose bylaws stated:

“This Society shall be composed of native Californians, foreigners and citizens of the United States resident in California prior to the ninth of September, 1850, and their male descendants who have attained the age of eighteen years, who shall be entitled to all the privileges and benefits of the Society.”

I’m sure this would have been an interesting monthly meeting in the great state of California!

The top of the barrel is marked "B B MARYSVILLE CAL.” The barrel has a turned down section for a false muzzle, dovetailed blade front sight and adjustable rear sight. The lock plate is engraved with a shield motif and other simple patterns. The hammer and barrel tang are also engraved. There are brass mountings with iron ram rod pipes. It has a straight grip half stock with a silver forend, wooden ram rod with a brass tip, double set triggers, squared, decorative trigger guard, decorative patch box and a crescent buttplate. The patriotic themed patch box is a neat feature!

The overall condition is fine. The action is strong all around. The bore is good. The stock is in excellent condition. This is a true rarity in American Long Rifles, a Benjamin Berry Bigelow from the Gold Fields of Northern California!
