LONDON Antique CHANCE & SON English BELT Pistol
ENGRAVED Self Defense Travelling Belt Pistol!
Here we present an Ornate Antique William Chance & Son Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa the 1840s in London, England. William Chance was a gunmaker in London from 1830 through 1860 and was known for his Indian Trade guns. This example is a percussion, back action lock pistol with a .44 caliber bore that would have graced the hip of a gentleman. This pistol features engraved German silver hardware throughout, with bands of German silver and gold at the breech end of the barrel. The barrel tang has a long, thin, engraved extension that goes all the way down the back of the grip: not a detail you see very often at all. It also has a pommel percussion cap trap. Considering the maker’s primary business was building trade guns, this is a very nice example of a finely adorned pistol.
The overall condition is very good. The steel surfaces have a light gray patina. The markings are clear. The stock has a minor repair at the front where the ramrod inserts. The bore is smooth and in good shape. The hammer spur has been repaired at some point. The action remains strong and crisp. Here is a handsome piece of English craftsmanship!
