This is one of the finest Rolling Block Sporters I’ve seen. Usually, only target rifles occasionally survive in this kind of near new condition as they were shot at ranges and then returned home to be carefully cleaned and oiled. Sporters, on the other hand, usually hit the woods and mountains where they were used hard in all kinds of weather and often a long way from dry shelter. This rifle with serial number in the 53XX range (about mid production, probably late 1870s to early 1880s) shows vivid case colors on the receiver sides, top and even on the bottom, trigger guard and lower tang! The colors are slightly dulled on the bottom of the trigger guard. The upper tang also shows excellent vivid case color as does the forend cap. Even the butt plate shows fine case color! Excellent deep barrel blue with only a few small spots of thinning. Original rear Remington buckhorn sight still retains fire blue and is mated with the correct original Remington small blade front sight. The hammer and breech block show about all the deep blue as do the two main receiver pins and retainer. Excellent butt stock and forend with most of the finish intact and perfect wood to metal fit. Matching serial numbers on the barrel (under the forearm) and on the receiver. Bore is bright and minty. Sharp and clear Remington marking on the barrel top and patent dates on the left side of the receiver. The bottom of the barrel ahead of the receiver is stamped “40 70” The muzzle has the correct “Remington crown” in which the high octagon edges are beveled so that when viewed straight on to the bore, the barrel looks almost round- only Remington did this and it is a good way to tell if a barrel has been shortened as the octagon edges will usually be sharp. 26” was the standard barrel length for the No.1 Sporter with an extra charge for longer barrels in each 2” increment. Few No.1 Sporters have survived in this condition. If you want the best, this may be it.
