Description:
This is a model 1848 U.S.Artillery Musketoon which has all the standard features of that model with the exception of barrel length. This rifle has an extra long 34 inch barrel which is not readily documented in reference material on this rifle. The middle barrel band appears missing and we can only speculate if that was done to facilitate the extra lenght barrel. The real reason is lost to history. The cocking mechanism functions with some difficulty, but once in the battery position the trigger fires and drops the hammer with ease.
This smooth bore musket is a genuine piece of American Military History. One can only wonder where it has been and for exacty what purpose. It would make an interesting discussion piece in the den, gun room, office or part of a gun collection that would never lose its appeal or interest.
