Barrel tang date stamped “1819”. Lock plate stamped “HARPERS/FERRY/1819” to the rear of the hammer. The “EAGLE/US” stamp normally in front of the hammer has been intentionally removed undoubtedly during the early Civil War as is so often seen on such U.S. arms that fell into the service of the Confederacy. All original except the trigger guard which is an old Civil War era replacement with a brass trigger guard from a percussion German Potsdam musket many of which were brought here during the war and the ramrod which is from a Civil War rifle musket. Otherwise has all the original parts including the lock parts. Metal in good condition with minor salt and pepper pitting on lock and barrel beneath an old coating of applied blue finish. Stock very good with wear and with outline of the inspector’s cartouche visible. Lock in functioning order and dark bore. Many thousands of these were in storage in Virginia arsenals at the outbreak of the Civil War in their unaltered flintlock configuration with near all converted to percussion by the end of the war and it is rare to find one in its unaltered state.
