Description:
This is a really fine example of the  U.S. model 1871 pistol in 50 caliber centerfire.
I bought this about the same time the Southerland collection was sold. He had a very comparable pistol but it had more scratching around the front sight where the barrel rubbed on a crate or rack. All of these has had some damage to this area that I have seen. This one has some scratching or rubbing which I hope you can see in the pictures. The Southerland Pistol had rust spotting the the polished breechblock and hammer sides. This one does not. Overall it is in better condition.
There are traces of case hardening varnish on protected places on the case hardening. Most is gone. I always wondered what it would look like revarnished on the case colors but I never did that. I think Turnbull does re-varnishing but I just did not want to mess with this pistol. It is too nice.
You can see the correct brown color on the pins on the side of the action. I think everything is correct and not messed with in any way.
The cartouche is flawless and has not had any finish slopped into it. It is very crisp. Most of these have had finish added to the wood. People always get some into the cartouche when they do that. The original finish was just oil. The cartouche was stamped After the wood was finished. This pistol is correct. No added finish to the wood.
The proper grey hardening colors are on the breech block face. Only the outside of the hammer and Breech block was polished after heat treating. There is no rust or spotting on the polished surfaces of the breech block and hammer. They are excellent and original.
There is no primer marking on the breech face. The pistol has just been stored since it was made.
The bore and chamber are bright and pretty. No pitting or rust.
The fire/ heat blue is superb. Trigger, screws etc. The screw through the grip does not have much finish on the head for some reason. The same screw sticks out the rear of the grip. The blue is perfect on that end. The end that should lose blue.
There are no serial numbers on these Military Pistols. There may be an assembly number under the grips, but I never took it apart for fear of damaging something.
This pistol has been sitting in a dark closet, in a case for years. I got it out and wiped it off for the first time in years.
This pistol is top of the line for this model. I have not seen one for sale that is better. If you collect Remington Pistols this would fit in the best collection.
Check out the pictures. They are the best description.
Please don't buy unless you want it. I do not want to risk damage by shipping it all over the place.
     No foreign buyers please.
Since this is an Antique I can ship it easily. I usually use priority mail insured.
E-mail to kurt6542yahoo if you have questions. I will add you to my contacts if you want to call. I get many junk calls and need to know you are calling ahead of time. Otherwise I only answer people in my contacts.
