Description:
Here is a very unique and collectible antique percussion cap pistol built by Henry Aston in Middletown, CT. This is a US Model 1842 that was the standard issue sidearm for the US military from 1846-1855. This pistol shows patina for it's age but it is very well preserved considering that it was built in 1850, an impressive 170 years ago! The barrel is a smooth bore chambered for .58 caliber ball. The bore has some pitting but overall looks great for it's age. Has beautiful brass accents all around with a brass front blade sight as well. The side lock plate is stamped "MIDDTN CONN 1850" behind the hammer and "US H. ASTON" in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel breech is stamped "NWP" which were the initials Nahum W. Patch, the civilian inspector of military contract arms. The wood appears to be the original oil stained walnut. The wood does have some battle scars and 2 easily visible cracks that run through both sides of the grip handle area. You can vaguely make out where proof marks were stamped on the left side opposite of the lock assembly but the wood has worn down over the years which make them unreadable. The hammer has a very strong spring and works well. The original hinged ramrod assembly is intact and in good condtion. See our pictures of this very cool and collectible military pistol and if you have any questions please call Justin or Ben at Olde West (530)243-8334. Shipping will be $35 insured within the USA.
