This is an 1844 dated, “VR" cyphered, Tower-made carbine that has practically all of a brilliant rust blue finish on the lock, as well as a commensurate amount of reapplied browning along the barrel. The markings are still crisp and clear, as are the engraved borders and the knurling on the hammer spur. The wedge-fastened, English walnut stock has been sanded, and has a slightly glossy added varnish over small handling marks and blemishes scattered about. Some stamped markings are still visible, but most are no longer legible. A short diagonal crack is present on the left side of the stock just at the breech of the barrel under the sling bar. The brass furniture have been polished bright, but with spots of darker patina scattered throughout. The sling bar and ring have a matching, mottled patina while the nipple protector and chain are no longer present (the swivel is still in place, however). The mechanism is still tight and fully functional and the carbine rates fine condition overall. This is a handsome Victorian cavalry carbine, nicely refinished, and would make a great addition to any collection of British military arms.
