RARE 1867 NAVY Remington CADET Rolling Block Rifle
.50-45 GOVT! One of Only 498 Produced!
Here we present an antique Remington Model 1867 Rolling Block Navy Cadet Rifle in .50-45 GOVT, made circa 1868 in Ilion, New York. Only 498 of these rifles were made for naval cadets. The cartridge was a bit more tame than .50-70 or .45-70 GOVT for training purposes. These would have been drilled with and used extensively for target practice. The Remington Rolling Block action was a single shot and a favorite in the US military as well as around the world.
The receiver tang is marked "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY3d NOV. 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866", and the left side has the naval inspection marking "P/F.C.W." for government Ordnance inspector Frank C Warner. The right side is marked with an anchor. Though these were made with bright barrels and case hardened receiver, this receiver has been blued at some point and the barrel and other hardware Japanned black, an old method of protective coating. Overall length is 47-3/8 inches with a 32-1/2 inch barrel. There is no provision for sling swivels.
The overall condition is very good. The markings are clear. The stock is in very good shape. The bore is in nice shape, bright with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
