#24022, Charles Osborne & Co., London: A 450 3 1/4" Black Powder Express Double Rifle That I Honestly Feel Might be Unfired With Bores That are Absolutely as New and the Balance of the Gun Appears it was Never Shot, Made about 1895, A Jones action underlever back-action locks with rebounding hammers, London proved, 28" steel barrels with a rib extension dolls head, Full length rib with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights that are platinum lined, Percussion style fences, Dolphin hammers, Full length trigger guard tang to a steel grip cap, Extremely solid and sound wood with nice color, Double shadowline cheekpiece, Sling eyes, Lever release forend tiedown, 14 1/2" LOP over the original 3/4" Silvers pad that still has life left , 9 lbs. 9 oz., Border engraving only, The original & honest barrel blue remains at 98% but there is some scattered surface blemishes but not pits, The barrel striking is near perfect, This piece has 90% original case colors remaining with scattered surface blemishes, There is light pitting on the frame the size of a Nickel without any dept, The breech face has 100% case colors except where the extractor bodies touch, The butt & forend are as solid as they were approximately 125 years ago, The original stock finish is at 85% and never refinished, The original checkering remains at 92%, The bores are absolutely as new and shine like a diamond, The inletting looks like the tree grew around the metal, Every screw remains at 98% and they lay north & south. It opens and closes with effort, just as you would expect from a piece that I truly believe might be unfired. The dolls head fits like a FJ golf glove. As my friend Mr. Wal Winfer would say, "We are but temporary custodians of all things on this planet. Treat this old piece gently. Load and shoot it with care. But, above all, preserve its integrity for the future enjoyment of the next temporary custodian."
Charles Osborne started in Birmingham in 1845 on Lichfield Street. He then was recorded at 3 Broad Street in London in 1881. This piece has the London address and it was proved in the London proof house. Osborne also had premises in Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland. Osborne was still in the trade until WWII. For many years this firm's specialty was a wide range of double rifles that went to the South African and East Indian markets.
