Description:
The K-38 Target Masterpiece was introduced in 1946 and produced under that name until 1957. Afterward it was renamed the Model 14 and produced until 1982. It used the same square butt K target frame as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece (Pre-Model 15). The K-38 Target Masterpiece and its successor normally use a 6-inch ribbed barrel. Interestingly, this example has the longer 8-3/8-inch pined and ribbed barrel with a 1/8” Patridge front sight. The rear sight is a Micrometer-click adjustable type. In keeping with the long target barrel, the K-38 has a .500-inch target hammer and, a .500-inch serrated target trigger. The front strap and backstrap have the standard 10-groove serrations. The grips are the checkered Target Stocks (as S&W calls them) with the extractor groove cut on the left hand grip. The serial number indicates the year of production to be 1956, according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition. Interestingly, the frame and cylinder in the right light have a purplish hue to them. The frame markings are all intact with no signs of polishing so the frame has not been reblued. It is likely that someone at the factory did not follow the bluing procedure correctly resulting in the strange hue in the proper light conditions. This happens from time to time and this error is not limited to S&W alone. There are a few light scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard. The cylinder has a light turn ring and powder burns on the face. There are four small spots of micro-pitting around the cylinder but are so small one has to look very closely to see them. The barrel has some very light finish scratches on the right hand side, otherwise, the barrel retains its finish extremely well. The trigger and hammer retain their color case hardened finish. The yoke or crane is a little tight when opening the cylinder but this can solved by cleaning and lubricating the part of the cylinder that fits inside the frame. The tightness is usually caused by older lubricant drying out, leaving a semi-hard coating over the surface of the part causing an increase in friction. Otherwise, mechanically, the K38 operates perfectly and the bore is in excellent condition. The sights do not suffer from dings or rust. The grips are in great shape and only show the most minute handling wear. Balancing even with the long barrel is very good using a two handed grip. The bore is in excellent shape with no rust or pitting. The revolver would make a fantastic target gun. If not used for target competition, the K38 would be suited to plinking or teaching a new shooter how to use a revolver. The 38 Special round it is chambered for is well suited for all these tasks and is available in a wide variety of bullet types and loads.
