Description:
30-06, 21" octagon barrel with a full-length integral rib and a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this exceptional rifle retain about 97% original blue. The receiver ring is neatly matted as is the full-length of the barrels rib, a milled section at its center has the VL&D name and New York address, the caliber and makers marking are on the two diagonal flats. The bolt body and extractor are bright showing only light wear to the engine turning. The rifle is stocked full-length, Mannlicher-style in a nice grade of English walnut. Rifle features a rounded left side cheekpiece with shadowline, hard rubber pistolgrip cap, Oberndorf sidepanels, nice dual fish lip curls on the underside of the forearm and a lovely horn forend tip. There are checkered panels at the grip and a wraparound pattern at the forearm, which are masterfully executed and an un-engraved silver monogram plate along the toeline. The stock itself rates very good plus to perhaps near excellent with the minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a carefully hunted arm, showing just the hint of some tiny flakes beginning at the rear of the upper tang. Rifle features a single trigger, hinged floorplate and a dual-keyed forend with a 14 1/4" length of pull to the smooth case-hardened buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a simple bead front atop a sporting ramp, the hood is no longer present, there is a dovetail insert midway down the rib where the original rear sight once sat. The receiver has been drilled and tapped here in the states and a Lyman 57W sight has been fitted, likely at the same time a new bolt handle was fitted, it a low-swept, scope clearance-style handle, the rifle is not however drilled and tapped for scope use. The VL&D (Abercrombie and Fitch) records show the rifle selling in 1931 to Mr. Arthur J Moulton, then considered one of the richest men in America. He re-consigned the rifle to Abercrombie and Fitch in 1948 at which time it was sold to one William Mikkola (obviously a copy of these records can be ordered from Griffin & Howe, holders of the VL&D and A&F records, for a small fee). Overall a very beautiful rifle, masterfully executed and proofed in May 1930.
