Description:
This is a Marlin 36A-DL lever action rifle in caliber 30-30, serial number C2153 and is a First Variation having the upper tang factory drilled and tapped for a tang peep sight while the left side of the receiver is solid and never drilled and tapped for a receiver peep sight. Standard 24" round barrel, 2/3 mag, walnut stocks, semi-beavertail fore arm, plain pistol grip stock with bullseye in toe line and correctly lacking the white spacer between the Marlin butt plate and wood. This also happens to be a scarce and rare factory second and is so stamped on the barrel just forward of the receiver. According to the text in Col. Brophy's book, they were not defective in strength or function but had some cosmetic failure that caused them to be so marked. Typically they were only sold to employees or on special offer to someone making a catalog inquiry. By all accounts, these early model 36 rifles had case colored receivers, but this one has the correct Marlin factory blue, so that would be my guess as to the "SECOND" marking. In all aspects otherwise, it is standard first variation Model 36A-DL made somewhere between 1937 and 1946.

CONDITION:  Barrel and mag tube retain 90% original bright blue with some light scratches and some fading starting on top of the barrel in front of the receiver from carry wear. Receiver retains 75% original blue with some light scratches and starting to thin from carry wear. Mint bore has the Ballard-style rifling, and  the rifle has a properly operating half cock safety. Fore arm is slightly loose from age drying - screws are as tight as they can get. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, no extra holes. Correct Marlin butt plate intact. Great shooter - see pic of 25-yard target using Remington 170 Core-Lokt factory ammo. Grades NRA Modern Very Good and a must-have for the Marlin / lever action collector due to its scarcity as a factory second - is the only one I've encountered in over 30 years of collecting/selling.
