Description:
This is an original 6th plate tintype of a handsomely dressed 'dude' with his Bowie knife ready for business. A fashionable weapon for a fashionable man. The early newspapers nicknamed them "gentleman stabbers". The image is contained in the lower half of the case which has separated. Measures 3-3/4" x 3-1/4".
This image was enlarged and displayed at the historic antique Bowie knife exhibition in Little Rock AR. in 2016 (image #2).  And published on the front page of Knife Magazine (image #3), which a copy will be included with the tintype.

The general concensus is that the fasion of carrying these life & death objects was pretty much gone after the civil war. That may have been true in most eastern states but out west, especially in San Francisco, knife makers were making beautiful Dirks & Bowie knives as a part of everyday wear right up to the turn of the century.

Only Tintype & Knife Magazine is included.  Free overnight express shipping.
