Description:
This is an early 20th century sword that measures 35 1/4 inches overall, with a 29 3/4" straight blade having single fullers and 2/3 length etched panels. The blade retains about 40-50% of the original bright polish, with the balance displaying areas of dark, plum-brown freckling on both sides. The blade has etched nautical and floral scroll vignettes on either side with the “BOSTON / UNIFORM Co. / CHARLESTOWN / MASS" retailer's mark on the ricasso reverse and Damascus star opposite. The brass hilt retains traces of the original gold wash finish with a darker on the balance, and brighter wear along the exposed edges and around the flare of the Phrygian helmet pommel. The light shagreen grip has light surface wear, an intact braided wire wrap, and a period sword not is looped on the knucklebow. The sword is housed in an original brass and leather scabbard which retains a commensurate amount of the original gilt finish on the furniture, however the chape is missing. This is an about good US naval officer's sword, and dates to around World War I.
