Description:
This is a faithful reproduction of the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, also known as the Peacemaker. It is chambered for the Old Western round, the .38-40 Winchester. Also known as the .38 WCF, it was intended to be an all-round use cartridge, but was found to be a little light for deer, requiring handloading to be effective for that purpose. Such loads put the cartridge past the pressure limits for revolvers, violating the one handgun, one long gun, one cartridge rule. The .38-40 however was well-liked as a defensive round, and indeed, is in the same class as the modern .40 S&W cartridge. The .38-40 is an odd duck among cartridges such as the .32-20, .44-40, .30-30, and .38-55, all of which go by a simple naming convention where the first number indicates caliber and the second the powder load in grains (black powder). However, the .38-40 uses .40-caliber bullets and 38 grains of powder! While the cartridge should likely have been called the 40-38, Winchester likely named it the 38-40 as it is a necked down 44-40, and the company wanted customers to make the connection between the two for marketing purposes. Regardless of the misnomer of its name, the .38-40 was popular enough to make it into the early 20th Century before falling out of favor, and then to be resurrected with the rising popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting in the 1980s. The SAA here has a 7.5” barrel for accuracy at long range at the cost of being slightly slower to draw from the holster compared to shorter barrel models. In Old West terminology, this revolver would be considered a “Cavalry” model, as the original SAA revolvers made for the U.S. Cavalry used this barrel length. There two other main model were the Artillery Model with a 5.5” barrel, again named for its use by a branch of the U.S. Army, in this case the artillery branch, and the Quickdraw Model with a 4.75” barrel, named for its ability to be quickly drawn from its holster. This example is in good-to-excellent condition. Physically, the gun is like new with little to no turn ring on the cylinder. The revolver exhibits finish wear, likely from having been laid down on one side for too long, or in in this case being stored in the box for some time. Color case hardening is well known more for its beautiful appearance than for its resistance to wear. Bluing and nickel offered much more resistance to the elements. As an SAA was carried and used over the years, the color case hardening was usually the first to wear away. The ejector rod head has some finish loss, visibly from the portion of it that was touching the surface the pistol was laying on. There is also finish wear on the trigger, base pin head, base pin retention screw, and some of the screw heads in the frame. The is a very small spot of micro-pitting on one side of the cylinder, and an unusual u-shaped spot of finish loss on the other. All of this is shown in the pictures. The bore is in superb shape and has no rust or pitting present. The original box is in good shape.
