Description:
At the onset of World War 1, and especially after trench warfare commenced, the British Army realized they did not have enough Webley Mk. VI revolvers to suit the requirement. Many European nations considered the pistol a badge of office for officers to be issued while regular enlisted men had to make do with their rifles. Of course, in the trenches the rifles used many of the participating nations would be all but unusable due to the limited amount of room to maneuver. Hence, pistols were needed quickly. The British purchased many Colt New Service and Smith & Wesson New Century revolvers, all in the British .455 Webley caliber, though in general the revolvers of both manufacturers were marked .455 Eley. Ammunition marked as either will work in the other’s marked revolvers. However, not all Colt or S&W revolvers were military issue. It was common for a newly commissioned officer’s family to purchase them a pistol as a gift. This is likely the case as there are none of the usual British military acceptance stamps on the barrel or frame. The pistol itself is in good condition given its age (106 years old as of 2020). The New Service exhibits a fair amount of holster wear, which is not unusual for a military pistol. The backstrap has no finish remaining indicative of frequent handling, a common occurrence for trench warfare as mentioned earlier. There are some scratches on the frame and barrel. The grips are a little worn on the bottom, the right hand grip being chipped at the front edge and a small crack at the heel. Conversely, the bore is in superb condition, and the cylinder locks up perfectly. It should be very accurate and would make a reliable shooter. It is rare these days to encounter an unmodified .455 revolver. Most have either been converted to .45 ACP or .45 Colt. Fortunately, this one was left in its original chambering.
