Description:
GORGEOUS 18th Century FRENCH FLINTLOCK Double by CHASTEAU A PARIS 1700s

ENGRAVED, GOLD, CARVED Beautiful Historical Gun

Here we present an antique Flintlock Double Barrel Shotgun by François-Alexander Chasteau, made circa 1750 in Paris, France. He worked at Rue des Sts. Peres approximately 1741-1784. His father was a gunmaker before him and known to have counted King Louis XV as one of his clients. This one-of-a-kind shotgun is a thing of beauty, luxury, as well as practicality. Everyone needs a shotgun, and this would have been made for someone of wealth and standing, and, likely, royalty.

This piece was built for fowling—upland and waterfowl. This is a very lively gun and very comfortable, even featuring a padded comb with a leather covering for the face (this is remarkably well-preserved). The comb has a low rise and the pad hits one at about the bottom of the cheekbone. The wrist of the gun is quite slender and is bolstered by the extended trigger guard that both supports the wrist and provides a pistol grip feeling. There is a sling swivel mounted under the tubes and a button under the butt stock.
This piece features twin flintlocks, each with its own trigger. Each is marked “Chasteau AParis” in a semi-italicized block font with flowing and exaggerated finials that resemble feathered plumage. The stock is wide between the locks to accommodate the ribbed twin barrels. The top of the wrist and the underside of the forearm is relief carved in the contemporary Rococo fashion. The butt plate, trigger guard, and ramrod tubes are cast and engraved with gold wash accents. There is a goose depicted on the butt plate tang.

The side by side barrels are blued with lavish gold designs and “CHATEAU A PARIS CANON CORDU”. There is a small blade sight on the center rib with a gold starburst. There is a large U-shaped rear sight on the barrel tang. The muzzle is double banded in gold.

The overall condition is fine. Lovely blue finish and spectacular gold. The actions remain strong. The bores are in very smooth and in nice condition. The stock is smooth and solid. It is simply amazing how gracefully this piece has weathered the centuries. This is a spectacular hunting implement, work of art, and piece of history that can be yours.
