Description:
This is a very nice Hammond Bulldog Single Shot Pistol in .44 Rimfire made by the Connecticut Arms Mfg Company in the town of Naubuc, Connecticut  (about 10 miles South of Hartford, CT).  It's believed there were 7,000-8,000 of these made from 1865-1868.  It has a 4" Octagonal Barrel with checkered hard rubber grips, charcoal blued barrel, case color hardened frame/breech/hammer, and fire blued screws.  In spite of its size, these are well built and heavy for a pocket sized pistol.  The breech opens by depressing the button on the top and pivots out to the left.  This pistol was made for .44 short and .44 long rimfire cartridges.  I'm not sure if there is a difference between .44 rimfire long and .44 Henry as used in the Henry Rifle and Winchester Model 1866 so I tried a .44 Henry and chambers it as well.  Top of the barrel has the Connecticut Arms Address and the circumference of the top of the breech has the October 25, 1864 Patent Date that is sharp and crisp. Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Excellent Condition with 85% bright original barrel blue with some light wear and brown speckles and a small area of light rust on the upper right diagonal facet of the octagon barrel.  If this were a Colt or Winchester from this era, it would be worth quite a bit of money as this level of original bright blue is tough to find on a 150+ year old antique gun.  The frame is magnificent retaining nearly all of its original case colors as well as the hammer and breech mechanism.  Even the backstrap between the grips shows some whisps of case colores.  Nice bright original fire blue on the screws which are in nice shape overall.  Grips are excellent with no chips, no cracks, no break, no repairs...sharp checkering with perfect fit to the frame and gripstraps.  Mechanics are nice.  Face of the breech housing the rimfire firing pin still retains almost all of its original case colors except where it's rubbed along the edge of the barrel...it may still be unfired as I don't see any shadow wear from a cartridge casing or residue from a spent round.  The bore is basically MINT condition...bright and shiny like a mirror.  We've had a few of these over the years including one in its original wooden case that had a spool of rope and 5 or 6 steel darts for line-throwing.  This is the best example that we've ever offered.
