Description:
This is an early first year Mod. 70 in 30-06 cal., with a very unique, and wonderfull custom addition. The gun was fit back in 1938 with a Carl Ziess 8X scope on a claw mount. I am assuming that the custom work was performed by Von Lengerke & Antoine Sporting Goods in Chicago, as the leather scope case is marked V. L. & A. on the bottom. They were a high end sporting goods store that catered to the preference of clients who wanted something unique. The serial number on the scope dates it to 1938, and the serial number on the rifle indicates a 1937 manufacture date. The rifle has a 24" barrel with a mint bore. The scope mounts are custom fit on the receiver and barrel, with the front base covering the calibur designation which is remarked in small numbers below. The stock appears to be in it's original finish, with factory sling loops, and the addition of a pistol grip cap added. The stock has no cracks or repairs,fits proud where it meets the metal, and shows only minor handling marks to the finish. There is however one ding on top of the comb ahead of the butt plate (picture10), The metal surfaces are in fantastic condition, showing the tipical pre-war satin hue. All script, S/N, and proof marks are crisp, and the barrel has the original sight package intact. The scope dismounts and accurately remounts to 0 easily and securely. This is quite a unique example of the pre-war craftsmanship available at the time from a high end sporting goods store.
