Description:

When asked by Winchester to design an improved lever action to compete with a recent Marlin offering, John Browning said he would have the prototype completed in under a month, or it would be free. Within two weeks, Browning had a functioning prototype of the 92. The initial rounds were the .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40 Winchester centerfire rounds, followed in 1895 by the new .25-20. The .25-20 Winchester, or W.C.F. (Winchester center fire), was developed around 1895 for the Winchester Model 1892 lever-action rifle. It was based on necking down the .32-20 Winchester. In the early 20th century, it was a popular small game and varmint round.
It was easy and economical to reload and was once a favorite with farmers, ranchers, pot hunters, and trappers. Though the .25-20 has been used on deer and even claimed the James Jordan Buck, a whitetail deer of long-standing record in 1914, it is now rarely used on the large-bodied game because of its sedate ballistics and light bullet construction, which make humane one-shot kills unlikely. This rifle is in 85% condition, with some wear on the receiver. WE PREFER NOT TO SEND TO A C&R LICENSE. Dimensions are as follows: 20" BBL, 6LB 4OZ, 12 3/4" L.O.P.
