ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1863 RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1863. 40” rifled .58 caliber barrel with Springfield Armory Ordnance proofs (V/P/EAGLEHEAD) at the left breech and the original front and rear sights. Lock date stamped “1863” and stamped forward of the hammer “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. Butt plate tang stamped “U.S.”. Original and fine example with the exception of the ramrod which is a very fine correct modern replacement. Extra nice example with metal with the medium grey patina and fine markings. Stock excellent with the original finish and two fine Ordnance Inspector’s cartouches. Excellent bore and working order. Nice pre-Battle of Gettysburg date.
