This particular Type 99 was certainly some soldier's pride and joy when it was brought home as a war trophy after World war 2. The Arisaka Type 99 was the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy's main battle rifle for most of World War 2, a shorter and more powerful model than the Type 38 rifle they started the war with that was chambered in the 6.5 Japanese cartridge. As you can see from the pictures, this rifle has an attractive combat-used look to it and shows finish wear and handling marks typical of an issued rifle.Type 99's produced late-war ("last ditch") rifles used lower quality parts, and less finish, as well as shortcuts taken to ease production. The "last ditch" rifles are usually distinguished by their crudeness: poorly finished stock, wood buttplate, very obvious tooling marks in the metal, rudimentary sights and an unfinished bolt knob and handle. These represent a scarce and desirable variation to Arisaka collectors. The original blue finish is still mostly intact but has turned to a brown-blue patina with scattered areas of wear and thinning. The sacred factory-stamped Chrysanthemum on the top of the chamber is mostly intact and shows evidence of being defaced in the field with a bayonet. That and the mismatched bolt are a strong indicator that this rifle was defaced prior to a Bonzai charge and then picked up from the battlefield by a U.S. Soldier. The chrome-lined bore is excellent in this Type 99, with nice sharp rifling and no visible imperfections. This rifle is matching except the bolt with all-original parts. The original stock is fully intact, solid, and has not been sanded or oiled. Both the handguard and stock are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage, showing only some very minor dents/dings you would expect to see on a battle-used rifle. All of the stock hardware, barrel bands, and wooden buttplate is intact and in great shape. All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, and the action is smooth and precise. The bolt turns into battery perfectly and the trigger breaks nicely without being too heavy or gritty like many we have encountered.
