Description:
#4785, T. (Thomas) Newton, Manchester: A Very Nice High Condition 12 Bore Pre-War English Boxlock Ejector, 30" Ejector dovetail lump barrels with a rib extension & third bite at .730 .007 & .018 (Imp.Cyl. & Mod), 2 3/4" chambers; I presume it was an original 2 1/2" chambered gun but in 1996 it was reproved in London to 2 3/4" chambers and 850 BAR with the proper reproof London marks, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .028" & the left at .026", Concave tapered rib, Double triggers, Frontal Anson forend release, Splinter forend, Straight hand stock at 15 5/16 x 1 9/16 x 2 5/16" over a 7/8" Silvers pad, Excellent cast-off for the right hand, With these dimensions it points like a dream, 6 lbs. 15 oz., 100% coverage of excellent Rose and scroll engraving that is very well cut, Extremely solid wood with deep black/brown contrast, This gun was imported to Texas after 1996 and I presume the barrels were reblacked at the time it was reproved in London, The blue now is at 99.5% with near perfect barrel striking, The gun retains 15% original case colors, The stock nicely refinished and at 98%, The checkering at 100%, The bores are excellent from breech to muzzle and totally free of any pits, The barrels are very tight and smack on the face with all the bite you could desire, The barrels ring with a nice chime. This is a very nice game gun from the Great Era of the English sporting game gun.

Thomas Newton's name lived on until 1940 at 48 King St. West in Manchester. The great writer in the British Shooting Times, Geoffrey Boothroyd, stated "Newton was one of a number of first class gunmakers active during the 19th century in Manchester. They were renowned for making guns of high quality and they formed part of which could be called the Manchester School of Gunmaking".
