Description:
Serial #114A, .303 British, 20 1/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This was originally a Lee-Metford Cavalry Carbine that was converted to Lee-Enfield and Royal Irish Constabulary specifications with the addition of the ability to mount a bayonet. The metal has retained about 85-90% of the armory re-applied blue, with silvering along the projecting edges and on the bearing surfaces of the, characteristically, non-matching bolt. Some moderate pitting is also present on the handle. The thickened portion of the muzzle has almost no blue left but rather has a freckled gray-brown patina, and the Birmingham-proofed barrel has an “E" (Enfield) stamp on the knoxform. Additionally, the carbine was restamped to “LEC 1" on the left side of the wrist socket above the hole where the Lee-Metford D-ring was once installed. The walnut buttstock and forend have an added dark brown varnish over numerous minor handling marks and blemishes throughout, as well as a short hairline crack at the rear of the handguard. The stock disk is unit marked: “3. ’04 / R.I.C. / 2072", and there are extensive Birmingham proofs and double arrow deaccession stamps on the barrel and receiver. The carbine is mechanically tight, fully functional, and in very good overall condition. It is a great example of a desirable R.I.C. carbine. Antique
