Description:
US SPRINGFIELD-SHARPS M1870 Military TRIALS Rifle

RARE 1 of 300 Model 1870 2nd Type Military Trials Rifle!

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield-Sharps Model 1870 2nd Type Military Trials rifle. Only 300 of these rifles were produced by Springfield Armory with some new parts coming from Sharps and the rest being made in the armory. These were issued to various units during the Indian Wars, along with other firearms that were participating in the trials with instructions to report on which system they preferred.
Even though these are called Model 1870s, this rifle is one of 300 produced with the so-called “Model 1874” style action. The actions were made by Sharps and Springfield Armory with newly fabricated parts necessary to complete the rifles. The action for this rifle shows no provisions for the pellet primer system and has the 1848 Sharps patent date on the left side. Only 300 trial rifles were made at Springfield Armory using all new cartridge receivers instead of converted Civil War actions. These were numbered from 1 up in their own range: this one number 94! The buttstock has an "ESA" cartouche on the left side for Erskine S. Allin. The buttplate tang is marked "US". The receiver, lock, hammer and lever are casehardened. Mounted with a full walnut stock secured by two barrel bands with a sling swivel on the forward band. The straight grip stock has a sling swivel and iron buttplate.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows use yet remains solid and in very good condition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic and rare piece of US and firearms history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
