RUSSO-JAPANESE PEACE TREATY JAPANESE TANTO GIVEN TO TEDDY ROOSEVELT’S CHIEF OF STAFF WILLIAM LOEB, JR. CA. 1905. 12”o/a with 9” blade which is unsigned. Leather covered scabbard with embossed and applique decoration. Leather grip wrap. Worn leather and point of blade broken and needing restoration overall. Roosevelt was given a katana and a wakizashi by the Japanese delegation which are now at Sagamore Hill. He did not attend the Peace Conference personally and sent Loeb who had close business ties to the Japanese. Directly from the granddaughter of William Loeb, Jr. and by family tradition giver to her grandfather by the Japanese Delegation for his efforts in the negotiations on their behalf. The tanto is very similar to the Roosevelt swords on display at Sagamore Hill. With old news clipping picture of William Loeb and Teddy Roosevelt in a Rio automobile circa 1907.
