US CIVIL WAR ERA NAVAL OFFICERS SWORD MAKER KLINGENTHAL ALSACE, FRANCE
This is not one of the later narrow bladed Naval swords after the Civil War this sword has the wide blade and was used during the Civil War. The hilt is brass mounted of regulation pattern with a shark skin grip with all the wires intact. The slightly curved single-edged blade is in fine condition with just a little age staining and very light pitting in several small spots. Has " USN " in a scroll, both sides have other designs. The spine of the blade is marked "Klingenthal" . The ricasso has two French inspector marks. This sword was probably a private purchase by an Officer, North or South or both as they were traded when captured. The sword is tight with some tarnish on the brass in various spots(see pics). There is no scabbard. The overall length is 33 " with a 27 1/2" blade.
